Weekend Box Office Report: 'Taken 3' Takes Top Spot

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Audiences remain taken with the Taken flicks.

Taken 3, the action-thriller sequel starring Liam Neeson, finished first at the box office by earning an estimated $40-million on its weekend debut.

That put it well ahead of the runner-up drama, Selma, the new Martin Luther King drama, which took in $11-million, slightly more than the holdover third-place finisher, Into the Woods, which earned $10-million.

The leader of the last two weekends, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, fell to fourth with $9-million.

And rounding out the top five was Unbroken, with $8–million.

Overall, industry-wide totals were slightly down compared to a year ago.
