Weekend Box Office Report: 'No Good Deed' Goes Unpunished

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On a second straight abysmal weekend at the box office, No Good Deed went unpunished at multiplexes.

The suspense thriller starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson opened by earning an estimated $25-million and finished first at the box office.

The runner-up was last weekend's leader -- the family-audience sequel, Dolphin Tale 2 -- with $17-million.

In third place was Guardians of the Galaxy, which took in $8-million. That puts the comedic fantasy's cumulative total over the $300-million mark, marking it as this year's biggest commercial hit thus far.

The other new attraction to crack the top ten was the crime thriller, The Drop, with Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini, which earned a modest $4-million, good for sixth place.

Overall, industry-wide totals were low, as expected this time of year, but were at least a good deal higher than those of last weekend.
