Weekend Box Office Report: 'Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' Runs To The Top

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The second installment in The Maze Runner franchise ran its way to a first-place finish at the box office

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials earned an estimated $30-million on its debut weekend.

That topped the Johnny Depp-starring crime drama, Black Mass, which placed second with $23-million.

Holdovers took third and fourth – The Visit earned $11-million and The Perfect Guy $10-million.

And rounding out the top five was the new mountain-climbing disaster drama, Everest, which took in a modest $8-million, but was only showing so far on IMAX screens and will open wider next weekend.

Overall, industry-wide totals were ever-so-slightly behind those of a year ago.
