Weekend Box Office Report: 'Kung Fu Panda 3' Fights To The Top

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A familiar animated panda led the way at the box office over the weekend.

The second sequel, Kung Fu Panda 3, with Jack Black voicing the lead, earned an estimated $41-million over the weekend, for an easy first-place finish.

The distant runner-up was the Oscar-nominated drama, The Revenant. It took in $12-million.

The sci-fi blockbuster, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, took third with $11-million.

Placing fourth was the new rescue thriller, The Finest Hours, with $10-million.

One other new release cracked the top ten: the comedy spoof, Fifty Shades of Black, earned $6-million, good for ninth place.

Overall, industry-wide totals were higher than those of last weekend and those of last year on the same weekend.
