Weekend Box Office Report: 'Insurgent' Takes Over Top Spot

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Running from the ball, Cinderella ran right into Insurgent.

The second installment in the science fiction franchise, Divergent, Insurgent, starring Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet, earned an estimated $54-million on its opening weekend to take the box office crown.

The live-action fairytale, Cinderella, dropped to second, but still took in a robust $34-million.

No other title even reached the $6–million mark.

The weekend's other debuting mainstream release, The Gunman, an action thriller starring Sean Penn, tied for third with the holdover, Run All Night, with $5-million.

Overall, industry-wide totals were slightly below those of a year ago.
