Weekend Box Office Report: 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Remains Front-Runner

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On a slow-as-molasses weekend at multiplexes with little in the way of new releases, Guardians of the Galaxy remained in first place by default.

The comedic comic book-inspired fantasy thriller, one of the late summer's legitimate smashes, earned an estimated $10-million, moving it ever closer to the $300-million mark and keeping it in the top spot for the third consecutive weekend.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles held onto the runner-up spot with under $7-million.

And in third was the drama, If I Stay, with just under $6-million.

The only new attraction, the rock-n-roll drama, The Identical, took in under $2-million in its debut, not enough to crack the top ten.

Overall, industry-wide totals were predictably low on this post-Labor Day weekend, which registered as one of the quietest moviegoing weekends in years.
