Weekend Box Office Report: 'Gone Girl' Goes Right To The Top

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Where have all the weekend moviegoers gone? To Gone Girl. Most of them anyway.

The marital thriller based on the best-seller, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, debuted in first place at the box office by earning an estimated $38-million on its initial weekend.

But it barely eked out a victory because also making a strong showing as the close runnerup was the new horror thriller, Annabelle, which took in $37-million.

Last weekend's ticket-selling leader, The Equalizer, with Denzel Washington, dropped to third with a total of $19-million.

The weekend's other new attraction, Left Behind, the faith-based apocalyptic thriller featuring Nicolas Cage, earned $7-million, good for sixth place.

Overall, industry-wide totals were well above those of a year ago.
