Weekend Box Office Report: 'Dory' Still Swimming Strong

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Three new movies landed in theaters over the holiday weekend, but none could perform as swimmingly as Dory.

The animated sequel, Finding Dory, made it three first-place finishes in a row by earning an estimated $42-million over the weekend.

But the next three slots went to debuting mainstream attractions.

Second place belonged to the jungle adventure, The Legend of Tarzan, which earned a strong $38-million.

Third went to the horror sequel, Purge: Election Year, which took in $31-million.

Fourth was the Steven Spielberg kidflick, The BFG, with $20-million.

And rounding out the top five was the holdover, Independence Day: Resurgence, also a sequel, with $17-million.

Overall, industry-wide totals were pretty much a match of those of last weekend, but well ahead of those of a year ago.
