Weekend Box Office Report: 'Don't Breathe' Beats 'Suicide Squad'

 

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Breathing life into this weekend's box office landscape – characteristically slow at the end of August -- the thriller, 'Don't Breathe,' finished first on its debut by earning an estimated $26-million.

That dropped August's box office champ, 'Suicide Squad,' into the runner-up spot. It took in another $12-million as it continues to approach the cumulative $300-million mark.

Third and fourth place went to holdover animated attractions, 'Kubo and the Two Strings' and 'Sausage Party,' with just under $8-million each.

And fifth was the debuting action thriller, 'Mechanic: Resurrection,' which earned just over $7-million. Overall, industry-wide totals were lower than those of last weekend but greater than those of a year ago.
