WEATHER: A Nice, Spring-like Memorial Day Weekend

By Geoff Bansen

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's shaping up to be a great Memorial Day Weekend!

If you have the day off to get a head start on your travel, you're in for a great travel day. Sunny skies may give way to a few afternoon clouds and even a few sprinkles dropping down through the Lehigh Valley, but Friday is generally a terrific day, with highs in the mid 70s. Those clouds and any showers are associated with a weak trough that will dig in this afternoon, and its passage will mean cooler temperatures on Saturday. With high pressure firmly in place thought, there will be minimal cloud cover, low humidity, and very light winds. So despite highs only in the upper 60s to around 70, it is going to be a very nice spring day.

Sunday will again be nice and temperatures will be around 10 degrees warmer. Temperatures continue to rise into Memorial Day, which is also expected to stay mainly dry despite increased cloud cover and an isolated shower or thunderstorm. The Lehigh Valley and the Poconos will have the best chance of seeing any wet weather on Monday, which is good news as they are now in a moderate drought. By Tuesday, we might very well see the first 90 degree day of 2015 in Philadelphia.

If you are planning a shore getaway this weekend, keep in mind that ocean temperatures are still very chilly. It doesn't take long for hypothermia to set in when the water is below 60 degrees! This week is also National Safe Boating Week. Be sure to use safe and responsible boating practices this weekend. For more information, click here.

Have a happy and safe Memorial Day!
