Watson Coleman Makes History With New Jersey Win

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey representative-elect will make history when she takes the oath of office in January, becoming the first black woman to represent the state in Congress and the first woman to do so in more than a decade.

Democrat Bonnie Watson Coleman views her status through an economic lens, saying she will focus her time in Congress on improving the economy and society "collectively."

Coleman faced off against another woman in her race. Political experts say they think there's pressure on political parties to nominate women.

Watson Coleman will join a growing number of women in Congress, who have seen their ranks increase by 10 members since the 2010 election.
