Water Main Break Shuts Down Vine Street Expressway

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Traffic is moving again on the Vine Street Expressway after an early morning water main break forced the closure of the highway in Center City Philadelphia for several hours.

The 12-inch main burst at 4:30 a.m. Sunday at 17th and Callowhill Streets in Spring Garden.

The water was pouring over the 17th Street Bridge and icing up.

As a result, the expressway (I-676) was closed in both directions for more than four hours.

The ramps from the Schuylkill Expressway to the Vine Street Expressway were also closed.

Crews turned off the main while they worked to repair it, and the roadway was reopened to motorists shortly before 9 a.m.
