Philadelphia Trash, Recycling Collection Suspended Tuesday As Crews Work To Keep Streets Clear During Winter Storm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia officials held a press conference Monday morning to discuss steps they are taking to stay on top of the storm. Officials say crews have been plowing city streets since Sunday afternoon.

So far, they've been able to stay ahead of the storm, although they are prepared for more challenges Monday as heavier snow moves into the area.

"Over 450 pieces of equipment including support from other city agencies and private contractors have been mobilized. Crews began brining streets over the week and we have over 50,000 tons of salt available," Philadelphia Streets Department Commissioner Carlton Williams said.

Officials announced trash and recycling pickup has been suspended for Tuesday.

Residents should hold onto their trash and recyclables until next Tuesday.

Philadelphia is under a Code Blue emergency and the homeless outreach hotline is 215-232-1984. The number can be called 24/7 if you need shelter or see someone who might need shelter.

Officials say money from the CARES Act allowed them to maintain shelter beds from the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

Executive Director of the Office of Homeless Services Liz Hersh says there are definitely beds available but she did not have an exact number regarding how many.
