Volunteers Needed For Seniors Battling Chronic Conditions

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Corporation for Aging is looking for volunteers to help senior with chronic conditions live healthier lives.

Nearly 90-percent of Philadelphian's 60 and older have at least one chronic condition according to national statistics.

Sharon Congleton, Health Promotion Nurse Consultant with the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, says volunteers are needed to help teach seniors coping skills so they can handle such issues as sleeplessness, fatigue and pain.

"If you give older adults the tools that they need to handle their symptoms those folks will be able to stay out of the hospital and also of course not to have as many emergency room visits, thus reducing health care costs."

Volunteer training sessions begin August 31st. You can find out more at pcacares.org.
