Volunteers Hit The Streets For Final Push Registering Voters
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Tuesday is the last day for Pennsylvania residents to register to vote, and this weekend, there's a major push around town to get people to the polls in November. Some groups had a bigger turnout of volunteers, after hearing Donald Trump's caught-on-tape comments about women.
Along Baltimore Ave. in West Philadelphia, different organizations comb through the 'Neighborhood to Neighborhood' Festival checking on eligible voters, asking residents of their registration is up date.
Marvetta Coleman is with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Alumnae and said her group felt they needed to encourage people to vote, after Trump's lewd words.
"In particular, what's going today, we think it's extremely important that everyone that is eligible be registered to vote." she said.
Penn student Madison Lane gathered other students to canvas the event, and said despite the rain, almost all the volunteers turned up.
"It has been busy, there's a pretty big turnout. A lot of people are already registered, this is the last weekend-- the final push, so anything we can get, we are going to be happy with."
The deadline to register to vote in New Jersey is October 18.
