Volunteers Give A Day Of Service To Help Make Camden A Better Place

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Volunteers fanned out across Camden today with rakes and brooms in hand to help clean up parks and other parts of the city.

A crew of volunteers rake and bag leaves at an empty lot near Fountain and Fremont. This is the 7th year of the Camden Clean campaign.

City spokesman Vincent Basara says it's imperative to keep the momentum going.

"Right now, Camden is experiencing a revitalization with potential employers, businesses coming to the city. It's important to see that the city is kept up and well-maintained."

Camden residents as well as people from neighboring towns are giving their time and service. 21-year-old Malia Walker came all the way from Sicklerville to help out.

"It's just important to keep the community clean, you know, there's a lot of kids out here. They don't need to be around this dirtiness."

She says it makes her feel good to give back, and making a few new friends is an added bonus.
