Volunteers Come From Near And Far To Check In For WMOF

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Saturday was volunteer check-in day at the Pennsylvania Convention Center for the World Meeting of Families.
11,500 volunteers registered for the World Meeting of Families, but director of volunteers Suzanne Kinkel says from past experience, she can tell us that not everyone shows up for duty. She expects about 10,000 to check in.
But how did they become volunteers?"
"The went online, they signed up," says Kinkel, "they went through a background check and then they chose an event that they wanted to volunteer at."
And how many people have registered for the World Meeting of Families?
"17,500 was the last number that I heard."
Kinkel says most of the volunteers will be utilized Saturday and Sunday when the Pope visits Philadelphia.
"So it actually starts with us on Monday for the World Meeting of Families on the congress side but on the weekend is where most of the deployment takes place."
The volunteers will be identifiable through the bright orange t-shirts they received at check-in.
