Villanova Football Loses Nail Biter To Syracuse
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Villanova Wildcats football team opened their season on the road against Syracuse on Friday night. The Wildcats attempted to take down the heavily favored Syracuse squad, but came up just short falling to them by a final score of 27-26.
The game took two overtimes to complete as Syracuse's narrowly avoided what would have been an upset to kick off their season.
Syracuse was without the services of starting quarterback Terrel Hunt who was ejected in the second quarter after throwing a punch at an opponent. Syracuse led by a field goal at the time, but the departure slowed their offense.
Villanova chipped away throughout the second half and eventually tied the game up midway through the fourth quarter. The game went into overtime and both teams were able to record field goals early in the first overtime.
Villanova's fate was sealed following a failed two point conversion attempt in the second overtime which lead to the 27-26 final score.
