Video Call Doctor Appointments May Be Here Soon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- You may be able to visit your doctor without leaving home, and insurance will pick up the tab.

Independence Blue Cross will now pay for video appointments with your primary care doctor. Don Liss, company Vice President for Clinical Programs and Policy says it's not for those routine phone calls you make requesting appointments or medication renewals.

"It's to replace what otherwise would have been an office visit, and evaluation for a relatively simple and straight forward medical condition," Liss said.

He says telemedicine is the wave of the future; it's more convenient and may be easier for many patients to access through their smart phone, tablet or computer.
