Veterinarian: Bitter Cold Temperatures Not The Only Danger For Pets This Winter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's not only us humans feeling the bitter cold today across the Delaware Valley.

We caught up with the head veterinarian at the SPCA's Wellness Clinic for some tips on keeping our furry friends warm.

"You want to stick to short leash walks only, and not leave your dog outside unsupervised for long periods of time.  You want to be careful with de-icing products. In large amounts, if they are ingested, they can be toxic to your dog. Just make sure to look out for your dog shivering, or if they seem lethargic.  And make sure they have plenty of access to water to stay hydrated," Dr. Jeffrey Stupine told Eyewitness News.

According to safepaw.com, salt-based de-icers can burn the skin of your dog's paws, causing ulcers and redness that can lead to bacterial infections.

Dogs can also develop stomach problems like inflammation from licking salt-based products off their paws.
