Using Comedy To Deal With Heart Disease

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Heart disease is a serious topic. But one group is hoping a lighthearted (pun intended) approach will help to spread awareness.

The American Heart Association is using comedy to help communicate ways to prevent heart disease and stroke in the African-American and Latino communities.

The second annual Power of Laughter Luncheon features comedian Kim Coles of "In Living Color" and "Living Single" fame. The Brooklyn native says while she's in Philly make hers a vegetarian cheesesteak, thank you…

"I have a husband who is eleven years my junior. And so I had better stay healthy!"

She says it's possible to convey serious information through humor:

"It's not making fun of the disease. It's not making fun of people who have the disease or who might be in danger of it. It's just making light of expressing joy that now we know -- now we know there's something we can do about it."

The luncheon is next Saturday, September 10th at First District Plaza at 38th and Market. Tickets are $25.
