Upper Darby Police Take Steps To Keep Online Shoppers Safe
UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) -- With the holidays approaching, and online shopping ramping up, Upper Darby police are offering a way for shoppers using social media or sites like Craigslist to protect themselves.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the lobby of the Upper Darby police station can be used for a meeting place for anyone buying or selling through social media or on websites like Craigslist.
"It gives them a sense of safety, both the seller and the buyer," says Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood, "because these predators that are there, these bums who set people up to rob them or rip them off – and sometimes kill them is unacceptable."
Chitwood says police won't get involved in transactions or settle any disputes, but he says the presence of law enforcement should be deterrent, and he adds the lobby and the front of the building is under 24-hour surveillance.
