Union: Showboat Casino Warns Of Possible Closure

ATLANTIC CITY (CBS) -- Less than six months after the Atlantic Club shut down in January, another Atlantic City casino is expected to be closing in a couple of months. The official announcement is likely to come Friday.

More than 2,000 people who work at the Showboat Casino are going to get 60 day federally mandated warnings that their jobs are being eliminated. That word comes from officials within Local 54, Atlantic City's largest union, which represents over 800 workers there.

Union President Bob McDevitt, in a printed statement, blasted Caesar's, the owner of Showboat, and called closing a casino that he says is still profitable "a criminal act committed on the people of Atlantic City."

Neither Showboat nor Caesar's could be reached for comment.
