Two Officers Injured In Frankford Garage Fire

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Two Philadelphia police officers suffered minor injuries while helping battle a garage fire overnight in the city's Frankford section.

The flames broke out around 1 a.m. Monday inside a double garage at a residence along the 1100 block of Arrott Street.

Authorities say police and fire crews arrived to find the garage fully engulfed in flames, and also discovered a station wagon on fire inside. Authorities say while firefighters were battling the blaze, there was a minor explosion and a piece of metal from the vehicle's rear bumper flew through the air and struck two police officers in their legs.

Both officers were taken to Aria Frankford Hospital in stable condition. Police say one officer was being treated for a broken leg and the other for a cut to his leg.

Two people who were inside an apartment above the garages escaped the blaze on their own with no injuries.

Crews were able to place the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

The two residents inside the apartment were displaced as a result of the fire.

There was no immediate word on what sparked the blaze.
