Route 1 Reopens After Truck Fire In Delaware

MIDDLETOWN, Del. (CBS) – Delaware State Police continue to investigate a vehicle fire which shut down both southbound lanes of DE Rt. 1 north of Smyrna Wednesday morning.

Police say the incident happened around 11 a.m. as a tractor trailer loaded with live chickens was traveling southbound on DE Rt. 1 north of Black Diamond Road. According to police, a tire located on the rear of the trailer blew and caused a fire to start. Police say the driver was able to pull the truck onto the shoulder of the roadway and exit the vehicle without incident.

The fire was subsequently extinguished by members of the Townsend Fire Company.

There were no injuries.

The southbound lanes of DE Rt. 1 remained closed until the load of chickens could be placed on another tractor trailer and the disabled truck was removed from the scene.

The highway was re-opened at around 3:10 p.m.
