Rookie Trooper's T-Shirt Tourniquet Helps Save Crash Victim

GLOUCESTER, N.J. (CBS) -- A rookie New Jersey State Police trooper jumped into action and saved a person's life after a horrific crash on the Atlantic City Expressway.

The crash happened in Gloucester Township around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. That's when off-duty Trooper Kenneth Minnes notices two victims on the side of the road.

The passenger was bleeding heavily from their arm.

Minnes quickly made a tourniquet out of a tree branch and a t-shirt and applied it to the victim's arm.

"I knew it would've been, as a critical injury, I knew he would've most likely died if I hadn't done something with the amount of blood that was there," said Minnes. "Acting quickly and responding quickly and dealing with the stress and the commotion in a situation like that was taught to me by the state police through the academy."

Minnes just graduated from the State Police Academy last year.
