Trial Begins For Woman Accused In Gay Couple Attack

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  Opening statements began in the trial of a Bucks County woman charged in connection with a 2014 attack on a gay couple at 16th and Chancellor Streets in Center City.

Two men previously pleaded guilty for their roles in the confrontation.

Assistant District Attorney Allison Ruth told jurors 25-year-old Kathryn Knott of Southampton was slinging derogatory gay slurs and throwing punches that night.

She says Knott was among 15 people who encountered the two men.

Many of whom just stood around, but Ruth says witnesses will testify Andrew Haught and Zachary Hesse were punched, separated, and surrounded.

Haught's broken jaw was wired shut for eight weeks.

She also says Knott's prior tweets show she doesn't like gay people.

Defense lawyer Louis Busico says those were tweets from years ago when she was a college student.

He also says the defendant never laid a hand on a soul, and was merely present during the confrontation.

The two men in the group who pleaded guilty were put on probation for 3-5 years.
