Tree Surgeon Volunteers Spruce Up a Section of Fairmount Park

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Fairmount Park got a haircut today, thanks to donated work from dozens of arborists.
Powerful chipper-shredders (below) devoured the cuttings dropped by tree trimmers, either standing in lift buckets or dangling from ropes far overhead.

This was the "Arbor Day of Service" by the local chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture ("ISA"). Arbor Day is this Friday, April 25th.
Event chair Peter Fixler said this year's site was located at North Georges Hill Drive and Belmont Avenue.
"This is the ISA Memorial Grove," he explained. "The Pen-Del chapter (of ISA are) the caretakers of this, and it's been 12 years since we've been here before. And we're here to upkeep the trees, basically."
Among those arriving for duty was Damean Snyder of Terraquarbor LLC.
"There's definitely a lot of pruning work that needs to be done," he said. "There's some hazardous trees that needs to come down. Little bit of everything."
Fixler says this is an all-volunteer effort that involves losing a day of work at a busy time of year.
