Trail Being Built To Give Residents Better Access To Delaware River
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Efforts are underway to build a trail that would connect two neighborhoods in Northeast Philadelphia along the Delaware River.
An abandoned railroad track will soon be transformed into the K&T Trail. The twelve-foot wide path will be a little over a mile long, connecting the Frankford Boat Launch with Lardner's Point Park and extend up to Magee Avenue.
"There will be bicycles here, there will be roller bladers, there will be walkers, baby coaches," says Tom Branigan -- executive director of the Delaware River City Corporation. "But it will also eventually connect from Northeast Philadelphia down to Center City."
That portion of the trail project is a little ways off. Branigan says they are looking at it taking between five and ten years to complete:
"We're working to not only build the trail, but also build connectors to get the communities down to the river."
The goal is to give residents greater access to the river that has been blocked by industry for decades.
