'Totally Unacceptable' Absentee Ballot Issues In Montco County
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - A Montgomery County judge has extended the deadline for absentee ballots until 8 p.m. on Tuesday after complaints from many who requested an absentee ballot either didn't get one, or waited longer than usual.
Montgomery County commissioner and chair of the board of elections Val Arkoosh says out of concerns over potential changes to the ballot, they decided to wait until the last minute to print them.
And she says they've processed a record number of requests, nearly 30,000. Yet they've gotten only about 40-percent back, much lower than the rest of the state.
"We have had some challenges with the post office and with the tight turn-around time that our statutes bind us to," says Arkoosh.
She says they have met all legal deadlines, and she stands behind their decision to wait to print.
Board of elections member Judge Cheryl Austin says whatever the reason, they need to make sure this never happens again:
"It is totally unacceptable."
