'Tofurky' Dog Eating Contest Held At Philly VegFest

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A herd of herbivores went to Headhouse Square Saturday for Philly VegFest, a celebration of all things vegan.

One of the day's highlights was the vegetarian hot dog eating contest.

Five competitors lined up in front of the crowd, determined to take down as many Tofurky dogs as possible in two minutes. Unfortunately, it didn't go so well for LJ and Erin.

"I was not ready." said LJ. "I was not prepared for these buns."

"Terrible." said Erin.

And how many did she finish?

"One and a half." said Erin. "The rolls are thick! They're like a hoagie roll!"

The winner ate a little more than two. This contest was just part of the days events, which featured more than 50 vendors selling all sorts of vegan treats.

Rachel Atcheson, director of the Humane League of Philadelphia, helped organize the event.

"I think it's important to raise public awareness that vegetarianism is a viable diet for a lot of folks." said Atcheson. "It's delicious. It's accessible, and it can be just as good as any other product."
