'MeToo' Movement Named Time Magazine's Person Of The Year

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The #MeToo movement has been named Time magazine's Person of the Year.

Time magazine has chosen "The Silence Breakers"-- the women and men speaking out about their experiences with sexual harassment and assault, including activist Tarana Burke, who started the hashtag 10 years ago in Philadelphia.

"There's a direct response to that arrogance and that show of power and that bullying that says we won't be silenced," Burke said.

MeToo has become a global movement with more than 3 million tweets. The hashtag went viral in the wake of accusations against Hollywood mega producer Harvey Weinstein.

Time's "Silence Breakers" features high-profile stories from actresses Rose McGowen and Ashley Judd, as well as a lobbyist, strawberry picker, and a former Uber engineer.

"The shame is not ours to hold, the shame is on the perpetrator," Burke said. "#MeToo can be a conversation starter or it can be the whole conversation."

The shortlist of candidates for this distinction included: The Dreamers, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and President Trump.
