Thousands Turn Out For 12th Annual Gary Papa Run

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Thousands spent Sunday morning taking part in the 12th annual Prostate Health International Father's Day Gary Papa Run outside of the Philadelphia Art Museum.

Nearly five years after his death, sportscaster Gary Papa's crusade against prostate cancer lives on. His brother Ron spoke for "Team Papa."

"He just loved Philadelphia," Ron said. "Being so public with his (battle) with prostate cancer, thousands of men are getting themselves checked regularly and for breast cancer as well. And I just think he spoke volumes in regards to trying to help others."

Steve Janiec from West Chester was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011. His team shirt read "2X Survivor"

"You never think it's going to happen to you," Janiec said. "It's just a total shock. I had melanoma about eight years before that, that's why they say I'm a two-time survivor."

His daughter Jessie is happy to be with her now healthy dad on Father's Day.

"One day we'll find a cure," she said, "but until then we'll continue to fight."
