Thieves Steal Flag At Former School, Fly Nazi Flag Instead

NEW PARIS, Pa. (AP) — State police are trying to figure out who stole an American flag flying outside a former Pennsylvania elementary school and replaced it with a Nazi swastika banner.

Bedford County District Attorney William Higgins calls the incident at the former New Paris Elementary School "disturbing" and says "it's certainly not going to be overlooked."

Troopers say whoever swapped the flags did so between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday.

The school is closed and is now owned by a development company.

Property manager Michael Kissell says he took down the Nazi flag after collecting evidence. A new American flag has since been donated and was put up Monday.

Kissell, a Vietnam veteran, says "to have this happen on our soil is just ignorant and totally wrong."
