PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The opioid epidemic is causing great concern in the region.

Philadelphia had 35 suspected drug overdoses in a five-day period.

An expert spoke out with an expert on warning signs of substance abuse and how to intervene and possibly save a life.

"Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States."

Recovery Centers of America's Chief Clinical Officer Deni Carise says if you suspect substance abuse there are things to look out for like changes in behavior patterns, changes in mood, increased isolation, constant lethargy and needle marks.

Caris says the next step is to ask them.

She says showing you care and letting them know that you're with them in seeking treatment could help a lot.

"And I would start out by saying I'm worried about you. I would just say to people I noticed you are struggling with things that used to come easy for you, I'm wondering what is going on."
