PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The older you get the more important it is to find a good pair of shoes.

For instance, the combined force of all of those steps each year eventually makes your foot wider and longer. Your arch may also flatten as the tissue around it settles. In addition, the layer of fat on bottom of your heel thins out and this loss of natural padding can cause discomfort and a heavier step. The solution might be well-fitting shoes that can cushion every stride.

There is a key point from a health standpoint that you should think of when picking out shoes: look for a pair that matches the shape of your foot and try before buying to ensure they don't slip or pinch. Give your toes plenty of room to breathe so to speak.

The problem is that many people search for good looking shoes not good fitting shoes. For your health it is good to try and achieve both.
