The Oval Is Back In Center City!

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The City's Parks and Recreation Department has unveiled a new, free, open air event space that they are encouraging folks to visit over the next 5 weeks.

The Oval kicks off its 4th year of programs here at the base of the Philadelphia museum of Art. Katherine Ott Lovell, Commissioner of Parks and Recreation says they have a lot to offer this year.

"We have free programming every hour. There's going to be live music, there's going to be DJed music, dance parties, fitness classes," she said. "We have two sandboxes, we have ping-pong, we have corn hole; there's a beer garden! We'll have mini golf again -- free!"

Muralist Brad Carney designed the space here at The Oval this year, and he says the painting is called, "Rhythm and Hues."

Carney says a lot goes into designing the Oval.

"We started on Friday morning and we just ended so one week."

Lovell says programming open spaces has benefits.

"Active parks are healthy parks and safe parks."
