PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- When we think about diabetes most of us are aware that the condition can have a long-term impact on the heart and the kidneys, but diabetes may also have an impact on breathing.

Adults with diabetes have worse lung function than adults who don't have diabetes. Lung function decreases over time in people with diabetes. Adults with diabetes are more likely to have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung scarring.

The theory is that people who are diabetics may have more inflammation of vital tissues. Adults with diabetes are also more likely to have complications and be hospitalized from the flu and pneumonia.

The other issue is that the respiratory issues can also have an impact on diabetes and worsen the condition, which is not a good cycle to be in.
