Terminally Ill Kids, Families Party At Independence Seaport Museum

By Dan Wing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A group of children fighting life-threatening illnesses and their families spent this Saturday afternoon touring the Independence Seaport Museum.

The group of just over 50 people took self-guided tours of the various exhibits on display, while also taking time for some arts and crafts and a scavenger hunt.

The event was organized by the Casey Cares Foundation, a non-profit that provides fun programs to critically ill children and their families.

As Jen Sherlock points out, the idea is to give the families and their kids a day free of their normal worries:

"It's a time where the families can forget about their terminally ill children, and kind of put away their worries and just enjoy food, walk around and explore and see ships, and a lot of history."

Sherlock says the foundation's events run throughout the year:

"The charity provides ongoing events for the families for a lifetime. So it's not just one wish, there are several wishes and parties and other fun stuff that are ongoing throughout a lifetime. Event if a family loses a child, that family is still part of Casey Cares."

The families also benefit by building a network with other local families dealing with similar situations.
