22-Year-Old Delaware Valley Man Shares Journey About Student Depression, Saving Lives

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 22-year-old successful Temple University Business and Marketing Major is on a mission as he gives speeches at area schools and other youth based organizations to prevent others from making the life ending choice he almost made in high school.

Drew Bergman had everything to live for, but while a junior at St. Joe's Prep, he continued his years long struggle with depression and he attempted suicide. He describes that crisis moment as looking at his life through a straw.

"All that you can see is the pain and the sadness without the ability to look at the big picture and realize that tomorrow may be a better day," Bergman said.

A year later Bergman knew he had to speak out and with the Prep's support, gave an assembly speech that received a 10 minute standing ovation.

"These 10 minutes really showed me that I had the love and support of more people then I could ever imagine," he said.

That is the message Bergman wants others to hear as he continues to speak at schools through a Rosemont based organization called Minding your Mind.
