Temple Football Rolling Through Spring Workouts

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Temple Owls showed a lot of improvement during the 2014 college football season. After finishing 2-10 in 2013, Matt Rhule's first season as head coach, the Owls went 6-6 last year.

Temple is looking to continue that improvement here in 2015 as they work their way through their spring practice sessions.

"It's been a great spring practice," Temple head coach Matt Rhule tells KYW Newsradio. "You know our kids are getting better by the day. I think they're excited about the team they're bringing back and you see that enthusiasm, day in and day out. I'm really pleased with the way they're practicing right now."

Quarterback P.J. Walker was up and down as a sophomore in 2014 after a standout freshman campaign in 2013. Rhule talks about how Walker has looked here this spring.

"You see the benefits of maturity," Rhule says. "I think he's learned from last year, he's getting better. He has had a really good spring so far. Just a much more mature focus. Just a much more experienced, seasoned approach to the game and I think he's establishing himself as a leader."

One position that Rhule was anxious to get a look at this spring was wide reciever.

"Some guys who can get in there and win on third down," Rhule says, "win versus man coverage, some areas that we struggled in last year. And some guys have stepped up. Ventell Bryant, a kid who redshirted last year as a true freshman as he got bigger and stronger and got acclimated to college, he looks like he's going to be a threat. Sam Benjamin, who has been banged up and kind of moved around for a couple years, he's finally now older, more mature and starting to make some plays."

Temple will wrap up spring practice with the annual Cherry and White game on April 25th.
