Driver, 80, Facing Charges After Striking Teen At School Bus Stop In Voorhees
VOORHEES, N.J. (CBS) -- An 80-year-old driver is facing charges after police say he struck a student who was attempting to board a school bus in South Jersey Tuesday morning.
The incident happened at about 6:10 a.m. at Cooper Road and Robin Lane in Voorhees Township.
According to investigators, 80-year-old William Hoffman was traveling southbound on Cooper Road.
At the same time, a school bus, with its lights and stop arm activated, stopped in the northbound lane of Cooper Road.
A 17-year-old male student from Camden County Technical School was crossing Cooper Road to get on the bus when he was struck by Hoffman's vehicle.
The vehicle carried the teen for approximately 50 feet before it came to a stop.
The student was initially transported to Virtua Voorhees Hospital, but he was later flown to Cooper University Hospital Trauma shortly after his arrival. The teen is in critical but stable condition with an internal head injury.
Hoffman has been charged with Improper Passing of a School Bus and Careless Driving. He is also being sent to mandatory reevaluation of his driving privileges.
The incident remains under investigation.
