Teachers Learning About Law, Government In Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Teachers are becoming the students this weekend in Philadelphia.
Educators from across the country are in town to take part in an intense, two-day conference kicking off Friday at the National Constitution Center.
They'll be getting a crash course in the law and how to pass that knowledge onto their students.
Michael Maguire helped organize the first ever National Teachers Law School, with two goals in mind…
"To address the growing civic education gap and lack of quality, in depth civic education training for teachers."
He says too many people in our country lack fundamental knowledge of our government, and feels education is key to fixing that:
"We can accomplish a lot more if we give the teachers the tools they need, the resources they need by having justices and judges available to answer their questions, provide them a more in depth knowledge of the subject they're teaching."
Sessions range from dealing with tragedy in schools, the Bill of Rights in action and what students should know about the Constitution.
