Teacher Fired Over Same-Sex Marriage Invited To White House To Welcome Pope

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A teacher who was fired from a local school will be among those at the White House for a ceremony welcoming the Pope to the United States.

Margie Winters was let go from Waldron-Mercy Academy, a private Catholic school in Merion Station, after it came to light that she was in a same-sex marriage.

She tells Eyewitness News what she would say to Pope Francis if given the opportunity.

"I would ask him to listen to our stories of faith, and to listen with the heart of a shepherd with the mindset of hopefully including us more in the Church."

The human rights campaign, an LGBT advocacy group, secured the invite to the White House for Winters and her wife.
