Talk To Your Teen About Depression

KYW's Medical Report Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Teens and depression - it is a relatively common phenomenon but it is an issue which few talk about - and the silence can be deadly.

Teenagers often fail to seek help from depression because they're embarrassed about the problem. Stigma appears to be a key issue and the other concern is that it can be very difficult to get treatment even when there is a need.

A recent report took a look at teens and their feelings about depression - this was a poll done on a wide cross section of teens (most did not have depression or symptoms). The researchers found that worries about stigma and the reactions of their family members were listed as major concerns and barriers to care.

If you have a teenager you think is struggling with depression, it's important to speak with him or her about this. Let your child know that this is a major issue and they should seek help.

And be prepared - you may have to work closely with your doctor to find a provider to help with the issue.
