Officials: Body Recovered Of Missing Swimmer In Manayunk

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Officials say the body of a swimmer who went missing Saturday evening in the Schuylkill River in Manayunk has been recovered.

The swimmer, a man in his 50's, according to officials, was last seen just after 6 p.m. in the water near the Venus Island Recreation Center on Lock Street.

Officials say Marine Units recovered the body and the man was pronounced dead about an hour later.

"What we thought would be a rescue effort became a recovery effort," says Deputy Chief Tory Gore.

The victim was said to be attending the Hidden River Blues Festival. How the man ended up in the river is the focus of police investigation.

"It's very dangerous to swim in the Schuylkill because of the currents," says Gore. "We do not recommend it at all."

Police have not yet released the victim's identity or the circumstances surrounding his death.
