Suspect Accused Of Possible Sniper Shooting In NoLibs Charged With Attempted Murder

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The man who authorities suspect is behind a possible sniper shooting in Northern Liberties has been charged.

Officials say Lawrence Mitchell, 29, is being held on $500,000 bail in connection with the shooting last week that prompted police to temporarily shut down a portion of I-95 and Spring Garden Street during rush hour while they searched for the gunman.

Police say they responded to the scene last Monday evening after two people reported hearing several gunshots while in the parking lot of Delilah's Gentleman's Club.

Upon arrival, officers found a white Chevrolet Silverado with a bullet hole in the driver's side front fender and a bullet hole in the driver's side windshield.

Both victims were close to the vehicle at the time, but were not injured.

Police say video surveillance footage was recovered that showed an unknown male attempting to gain access to Delilah's roof prior to the shooting.

Additional footage was located that tracked the suspect's vehicle and path of travel, as well as a partial tag.

Police determined the suspect's vehicle was a tan 1997 to 1999 Buick LeSabre.

Last Wednesday, detectives located the vehicle parked in front of a residence in Laurel Springs, New Jersey.

Gloucester Township Police Department arrested the suspect, identified as Lawrence Mitchell, after they found him to be in possession of marijuana, a rifle scope, and a twenty round rifle magazine that contained live rounds.

Authorities released him after he was cited for marijuana possession. The next day, search warrants were served on his residence and vehicle.

Police took Mitchell into custody without incident and transported to him to the Gloucester County Police Department.

On Tuesday, police say he was extradited to Philadelphia.

Authorities say Mitchell has been charged with two counts of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, Violation of the Uniform Firearms Act, Possessing An Instrument of Crime, Simple Assault, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person.
