Survey: Young Breast Cancer Survivors Make Treatment Choices Based On Fertility Concerns

ANN ARBOR, MI (CBS) -- A new survey finds young breast cancer survivors are making treatment decisions based on concerns about having children.

Doctors at the University of Michigan tracked more than 500 women who were treated for breast cancer.

One-third of them refused the drug Tamoxifen because of fertility concerns.

Doctors say the drug reduces the changes of cancer returning.

Researchers concluded, "Fertility concerns negatively impacted tamoxifen initiation and continuation among premenopausal patients. Interventions to optimize treatment initiation and persistence for young cancer patients should include access to fertility preservation options."
