Survey Shows Many Are Willing To Lie To Get Day Off

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A new survey shows many workers are willing to lie to get the day off.

The survey from CareerBuilder finds 35 percent of workers have called out sick when they were feeling just fine.

When asked why they called in sick when they were feeling well, 28 percent said they just didn't feel like going in to work and 27 percent took the day off to attend a doctor's appointment.

Another 24 percent said they needed to just relax and 18 percent needed to catch up on sleep. Eleven percent took the day off to run errands.

Employers say they have heard some pretty outrageous excuses.

One worker said the ozone in the air flattened his tires and he couldn't come to work.

Another claimed to have eaten too much birthday cake.

One man even said he had to attend the funeral of the pet of his wife's cousin.

Although the majority of employers give their employees the benefit of the doubt, a third of businesses said they try to confirm if workers are actually sick and sometimes even drive by their house.

And be careful what you posted, some workers have inadvertently busted themselves online. More than a third of employers say they have caught an employee lying about being sick by checking social media.
