Survey: Growing Trend Of Using Plastic Over Paper For Small Purchases

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new survey indicates people are increasingly using their credit cards for small purchases.

According to a survey by creditcards.com, two out of every five people will use a card to make a purchase of less than $5.

But this credit card trend makes some people who spoke with KYW Newsradio nervous:

"We're becoming more vulnerable, definitely. I believe so."

I've actually had people use my bank card information and I didn't know why."

"There's a lot that can go wrong and they're trying to prevent that, but I mean, it can malfunction at any time."

(Reporter) "When was the last time you actually paid with paper?"

"Oooh, I don't remember. It's been a long time!"

This PetSmart employee says the survey sounds pretty accurate:

"I'd say 95-percent of my customers come in with a credit card -- not even a debit card -- a credit card over cash."

Even for $1 purchases, the employee says.
